Inherited Old Watch - Tell me more!

Hi All,

(Apologies if this becomes a duplicate thread, I created one and seemingly it disappeared!)

I'm trying to find out more about a watch that belonged to my wife's late grandfather who was an SOE agent during WW2 operating in France, and post war was British Consulate. Not sure whether he obtained this watch during either of these duties or as a high street purchase. No idea what year it is from, country of origin, value etc - hoping someone here may be able to shed some light on what seems to be a very nice watch in good condition that winds and ticks (well, sweeps) nicely!

Any help greatly appreciated, many thanks.

It's a Swiss make, probably made just after WWII, probably with caliber P478 as the movement. If you have a movement shot, I can be more specific. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Zafbasha,

When you say a movement shot, do you mean with the back off or of the second hand moving round? I'm not sure how to get the back off the watch without risking damaging it. Any advice? Just after WW2? Wow, looks in great shape for 70 years old!

Also - Are these watches valuable - do I need to get it added to our insurance/keep it in the safe?

Thanks again for the help, appreciate it.

ST.

That would date the watch to 1944-1945. I can't make out the movement caliber from the photos, but its one of the 400 series, like 478, 450, etc.

Thanks.
What would help determine the movement calibre?

It's under the balance wheel in the photo (the largest moving part) ending in "/A", I can't make it out.

So it's something like 4XX/A where I can't make out the X.
